🔪Instructions
This great recipe involves just a few simple steps:
Preparing Your Slow Cooker
Prepare your slow cooker by coating it with a non-stick agent. Any nonstick cooking spray or oil will work. Olive oil and avocado oil are my go-to coatings. In the case of this cheesy Texas trash dip, be sure to grease up for easy clean up!
NOTE: some slow cooker inserts come with a nonstick surface. Use of a non-stick agent is still suggested. However, oil is sometimes recommended rather than non-stick cooking spray to protect the longevity of the non-stick surface. Check the manual for your slow cooker if you have any concerns.
Alternatively, you can choose to use a slow cooker liner.
Cooking
- 🫕 Add all ingredients into your greased crock pot- except for about 1 cup of shredded cheese
- 🫕 Stir bean mixture to fully combine
- 🫕 Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours

🍽Serving suggestions
The easiest way to serve this hearty dip is right out of your slow cooker. A smaller 2.5-quart slow cooker is great for this purpose. However, this perfect appetizer can just as easily be made in a larger 6-quart slow cooker.
We love to serve this dip right next to some Buffalo chicken dip and Fiesta dip.

🔁Substitutions
- Block cream cheese can be used in place of whipped. Gentrly microwave cream cheese to soften it a bit prior to adding it to your slow cooker. This will allow you to fully mix it in with the other ingredients.
- Shredded Mexican cheese blend and shredded mozzarella are also good types of cheese to add to this Texas trash dip recipe.
- For a spicier dip, use a hot package of taco seasoning mix and swap green chiles for diced jalapenos. Hot salsa can also be used to dial up the heat in this Mexican bean dip.
Storing
Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container or zip-top bag. They will stay good in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Leftovers can be gently reheated in a microwave oven.
😉Hints & hacks
- Freshly shredded cheese melts slightly better than store shredded. But we all know I am way too lazy to shred it myself! This dip is always delicious with packaged shredded cheese!
- To prep this creamy warm bean dip in advance, simply mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and cover with plastic wrap. You can store this in the refrigerator for a day or two prior to adding it to your slow cooker.
- Each crockpot is different. The first time you make Texas garbage dip, watch closely to make sure nothing is burning. I have not personally experienced any burning issues when making this recipe, but better safe than sorry.
- I generally recommend using a slow cooker liner for easy clean-up! They are not overly pretty, though, so I skip them when I am serving guests.
- In the market for a new slow cooker?? I love mine!
- Always double-check that your slow cooker is plugged in and turned on! Nothing is worse than coming home to a cold crockpot! 🤪
Homemade slow cooker taco seasoning
If you prefer to make your own, rather than use a store-bought mix, this is the recipe I use:
Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix
- 4 tablespoons chili powder
- 1.5 tablespoons cumin
- 1.5 teaspoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried cilantro
- optional (if you like it hot): 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
Add all ingredients and stir. Store in a cool, dry, air-tight container.
